ROBOSQUARE was established in July of 2002 at the time of "RoboCup 2002 Fukuoka/Busan". Later, in November of 2003, Fukuoka City was designated as a special structural reform district for robot experimentation and development, and has seen much activity in this vein, such as experiments with robots on public roads. Starting in April of 2004, the bipedal Asimo robot visited primary schools within Fukuoka City, creating an invaluable opportunity for the next generation of children to learn about robots through direct observation of advanced technology and develop an interest in science.
In July of 2007, ROBOSQUARE moved to Momochihama in Sawara Ward, home to Fukuoka Tower and a concentration of broadcasting and IT related companies. Recently, the number of visitors from abroad in particular has been increasing, and ROBOSQUARE is drawing attention as a center for exhibiting and experiencing robots not only from Japan but from overseas as well.
Robot performance shows are currently being conducted ever day at ROBOSQUARE, allowing visitors to experience robots in action firsthand. ROBOSQUARE also offers classes where children can assemble robots with their own hands, and learn programming. Seminars by prominent scholars and businessmen as well as support activities for robot-related venture enterprises are also being carried out.
Through these activities, ROBOSQUARE aims to have all the people of the city become familiar with robots and for Fukuoka to become known as a city in which robots are developed and are encountered in everyday life. Robots are expected to be used more and more as society ages and the birthrate declines, and ROBOSQUARE will continue to inspire the people of the city and maintain the public’s interest in science and technology.
